CONCEPT
The aims of this research project are:
(a) to foster interdisciplinary collaboration amongst European scholars working on different aspects of a cultural history of sound
(b) six workshops covering selected facets of sound in media culture; workshop 1: New sound concepts and methodological approaches (Berlin, May 28-30, 2010); workshop 2: Sound in everyday life within popular culture (Vienna/Austria, November 26-28, 2010); workshop 3: The conceptualization of sound within a studio environment (London/UK, March 25-27, 2011); workshop 4: Anthropology of the senses (Berlin, October 21-23, 2011); workshop 5: New technologies, new sound practices (Lüneburg, May 11-13, 2012); workshop 6: Sound design and acoustic ecology (Milano/Italy, October 19-21, 2012)
(c) to work on and publish a reference handbook with key articles on the most important research fields of Sound Studies, scheduled for release in the year 2013/14, possibly in the new book series Sound Cultures edited by Michael Bull at Routledge Publishers.
(d) to present our ongoing research discussions in a series of radio features for the renowned weekly radio show Klangkunst at the national german radio Deutschlandradio Berlin
(e) to conceptualize and publish special issues in different journals, e.g. the renowned German Zeitschrift für Semiotik (Journal of Semiotics) edited by Roland Posner in 2013 and a special section of the renowned German Journal Positionen – Texte zur aktuellen Musik (Texts on current Music) edited by Gisela Nauck in 2011
