Concept
The purpose of the this course is to deepen understanding of how ecologies of the natural and built environment are shaped by sound and the ways in which sonic sensibilities are articulated. While the first part, Sonic Sensibilities, explores sonic knowledge in classrooms and everyday experiences, the Sound Cities course examines urban ecologies and related possibilities for sustainability.
To this end, students will:
• Take part in soundwalks and related performative research practices
• Discuss examples of what sound is, what it can do, and related theoretical approaches
• Consider how sound informs our understanding of space and place
*
Part A: Sounding Out:
Sensibilities of the Sonic through Theory, Method and Practice
• Address questions about sound and knowledge as they relate to access, equity, and justice
• Understand how the sonic informs critical discourses about knowledge production in institutions and through everyday experiences
• Explore how sound curriculum and pedagogical practices can create and sustain more knowledge within and across fields/disciplines in academic space
This part of the course focuses on how theoretical and practical constructions of sonic sensibilities inform how knowledge is constructed (sound curriculum) and delivered to others (sound pedagogies) within and outside of educational spaces. As these are social and cultural understandings about knowledge and what sounds can do, the course will also address these concepts in relation to questions of identity, positionality, and everyday experiences.
Key Question:
How can sound practices improve the conceptualization and construction of
sustainable, equitable knowledge ecologies?
*
Part B: Investigating Sound Cities:
Urban Sustainable Ecologies and the Sonic
• Address sound in relation to equity, care, and justice in urban and
natural environments.
• Understanding how urban infrastructures can be explored and
understood through sound studies
• Comprehending acoustic engagements with urban ecologies in Europe
and beyond
This part of the course focuses on the intersection of sound studies with other areas
of knowledge, like architecture, urban studies, and gender and ethnic studies, and
critical race studies. It also explores how sustainable sonic practices within urban
ecologies extend into issues of health and questions of social class, race, gender,
and sexuality.
Key Question:
How can sonic methodologies improve the conceptualization and construction of
sustainable, equitable urban ecologies?
