Abstract

This presentation intends to give a compressed insight into historical tendencies and current developments in the field of sound art. As a starting point the urge to explore the senses & the experience in the intermedia arts of the 20th century is described and analyzed; as a second step some of the new artistic practices will be explored that emerged in these avantgardes such as counter cultural activism, professional design practices as well as sensorial & social interventions; the new terminology of the sonic is also to be discussed. A brief detour to the audio-visual litany (Sterne 2003) shall then serve as a warning sign concerning a major sensorial fallacy in sound art. And finally the current tendency to explore the possibilities and limitations of an amalgamated and integrated sensorial artform of the sonic will be discussed.
