How do you experience the cities, the buildings, the squares and streets, the cubicles and the commuting zones in which citizens of today spend most of their times - every day, year after year, for decades?

The Sonic Talks

CONCEPT

The cities, the buildings, the squares and streets, the cubicles and the commuting zones are the environments in which citizens of today spend most of their times – every day, year after year, for decades. Yet, how one experiences these environments, sonically, sensorially, in moving and idling, in resting and in panicking, is seldomly adressed.

In a series of sonic talks the Sound Studies Lab will explore how selected edifices, areas for commuting, and zones for pausing are experienced – sonically. Sound is in these talks the main approach to analyze, to scrutinize, and to interprete the interactions and the dispositives of contemporary everyday lives.

The talks provide an intense introduction into sonic thinking and also a training in its corporeal and sensory practices.

This exploration will take place in 2 parts:

A) Path of Awareness

The sound and walking artist katrinem will prepare a fixed route in Berlin Mitte on which she will take the visitors and co-walkers into an exploration of street life, walking rhythms, urban regulations and architectural curiosities.

This route can be explored individually – and also together with the artist on selected occasions.

B) Sonic Talks

In a series of talks the sound artist Sam Auinger and the sound researcher Holger Schulze will provide an introduction into sonic thinking for the visitors and co-walkers. Starting in one building with all its sonic specificities and aural extravaganzas the audience will walk together with Auinger and Schulze into unkown aural territories – for most of the co-walkers. Exploring the capacities of sound events, listening training, and subtle auscultation.
